Feathers are the weightless structures that allow creatures to fly. Providing insulation and protection, feathers are soft and light and flexible. Hundreds to thousands of feathers surround the body, the majority of which are smaller downy feathers that provide insulation. The larger, stiff flight feathers provide lift and maneuverability up in the air.
